Earl Scruggs

Posted by elegant On March - 30 - 2012

The bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs died of natural causes on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at the age of 88 in Nashville. No one argue his string-bending and mind-numbing five string banjo excellence. Scruggs used three fingers to play the banjo. His music is imbedded in many hits of Jonny Cash and Hank Williams.

Scruggs, a banjo player helped to create and shape the modern country music industry as we know it. He helped to shape the success of Blue Grass Boys along with bandleader Bill Monroe, guitarist Lester Flatt and the rest of the group. His music partnership with Blue Grass Boys that started in late 1940s lasted until 1969 when he broke off from the band due to a dispute over whether to continue with the music or to look into new ways to play music.

Scruggs was best known for his 1949 recording of “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” with Monroe. He played a role in 1967 movie “Bonnie and Clyde”. He played a part in the 1962 hit TV series, “The Beverly Hillbillies”. After his breakup with Blue Grass Boys, he worked with sons in the Earl Scruggs Revue.

In 2005, the Foggy Mountain Breakdown was selected for the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.

The demise of the giant record labels

Posted by elegant On March - 13 - 2012

Then there were four record labels including Sony, Universal and Warner. Emi Group is being sold off one piece at a time. This group dominated the music industry for decades and is being replaced by the competition from digital media. It was difficult at best for the up and comers to make a deal with major record labels. No one could reach the stardom that some of the artists like Lady Gaga reached without the backing of the major labels.

However, myriad of digital companies are helping unknown to well known to produce and distribute music through the internet. This wasn’t the case with big label record companies. Among the new digital music media players TuneCore, ReverbNation and CD Baby are noteworthy mentions. Apple sold 320 million music players assisting the success of the digital music media. You Tube is also changing the way new comers are getting into the industry and promoting their success. Online stores such as Bandcamp are showcasing thousands of new artists online. Their sales reached $7.3 million in a 12 month period.

Big labels are facing big problems and are unable to compete with research that is being done by the digital media.
