On Monday, May 14, 2012, the Fox Network Group announced at the New York’s Beacon Theater that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will be joining returning X Factor Judges, Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid this fall when the X Factor begins.

Even before Simon Cowell’s announcement of Britney Spears joining the X Factor, critics including The Hollywood Reporter were betting on her success at the famed show indicating it will be a total disaster due to her inability to string a sentence and her competence especially in front of a live audience and a live show. Also, various published materials indicate that the creator of The American Idol, Nigel Lythgoe, expressed concerns over the selection of two new judges.

Britney and Demi replace last season judges, Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger. The last season host, Steve Jones has also been replaced. At this writing no one has been named to host the season two. But some speculators indicate former teen idol Miley Cyrus is being considered for the job. Another that has been mentioned in news media is pop star Gwen Stefani.

The X Factor faces heavy competition from the shows like The Voice in a plentiful of music shows.

Women fashions change rapidly, but the little black dress introduced by Coco Chanel in 1926 still a dominant fashion statement. There are books such as The Little Black Dress written by Holman Edelman that look into the timeless fashion icon. In 1961 movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the legendary Audrey Hepburn wore a sleeveless dress designed by Edith Head and Hubert de Givenchy which popularized the black dress. Later in 2006, this dress was auctioned for a record $923,187.

The dress is simple yet elegant. Many fashion designers created memorable master pieces with the dress. However, compared to other timeless dresses, the little black dress can be made at a cheaper price to suit anyone’s budget. Even costume jewelry works well with the dress. Therefore, it was available to many across all economic classes.

The little black dress can be layered with other pieces and accessorized for office use, glamorous party as well as to suit any season. It can be worn by woman of any shape, color, size and age. Therefore, it is a timeless beauty.

Lady Diana once wore a black velvet gown to a dinner party at the White House in 1988 and danced with legendary John Travolta.

Retailers are wooing customers into stores in droves. The Barron’s reports that last month (March 2012) sales at apparel stores recorded 8.5 percent increase instead of the expected 4.9 percent. Why the sudden surge in retail?

Spring brings new fashionable colors to the stores. More and more retailors are showing brighter red, orange and yellows. This deviation from once dominated by gray and blue are driving more people into retail stores. The customer psyche is enhanced when they see natural colors of spring at the stores which they see all around them.

On the other hand we have gone through a very rough time during the last year. People were afraid that they or someone closer to them may lose their job. Most of us had to budget finances very carefully. When we come to a point where we see brighter colors, a natural desire to splurge a little dominates our mind. The result is good for the retailer.

The colors of spring are satisfying the human eye rather than sending them away. This year’s brighter colors are bringing more customers to retail stores. Hope the spring will contribute its share to the growth of the economy which was in doldrums.

The art lovers all over the world mourned the death of Thomas Kinkade. The famous painter, Thomas Kinkade died on April 6, 2012 at the age of 54 in Los Gatos, California. The reason for his death is not known yet but the family says that he died of natural causes. According to news releases, the artist have been drinking the night and a family member revealed that Kinkade had a problem with heavy drinking, and battled alcoholism for years.

He made millions form his art work. At the same time his “Painter of Light” paintings have been criticized by many. He began his early work as an air artist. Once famous Glenn Wessels who moved to Placerville, California where Kinkade lived made an influence over Kinkade’s early art life. Kinkade’s later work is more commercially oriented than a true art work. He painted happy scenes that some people criticized as made for sale. Twenty one pieces of Kinkade’s art work that were auctioned fetched over $34,000 each and some were sold for millions. A national network of Thomas Kinkade Signature Galleries promoted his work.

He was separated from his wife and four daughters, and his company filed for bankruptcy in 2010.

The bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs died of natural causes on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at the age of 88 in Nashville. No one argue his string-bending and mind-numbing five string banjo excellence. Scruggs used three fingers to play the banjo. His music is imbedded in many hits of Jonny Cash and Hank Williams.

Scruggs, a banjo player helped to create and shape the modern country music industry as we know it. He helped to shape the success of Blue Grass Boys along with bandleader Bill Monroe, guitarist Lester Flatt and the rest of the group. His music partnership with Blue Grass Boys that started in late 1940s lasted until 1969 when he broke off from the band due to a dispute over whether to continue with the music or to look into new ways to play music.

Scruggs was best known for his 1949 recording of “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” with Monroe. He played a role in 1967 movie “Bonnie and Clyde”. He played a part in the 1962 hit TV series, “The Beverly Hillbillies”. After his breakup with Blue Grass Boys, he worked with sons in the Earl Scruggs Revue.

In 2005, the Foggy Mountain Breakdown was selected for the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.
